Violet Grohl has been hard at work on an album, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, and those who’ve heard her music say it’s fantastic.
The 18-year-old daughter of Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, who has toured as a backup singer for her dad’s band and performed as a solo singer, is described as being “incredibly committed” to the music-making process and “to growing as an artist,” says a source. She’s been working out songs in a studio space gifted by her father for her birthday. Among her collaborators is producer Justin Raisen, who worked with Kim Gordon on her Grammy-nominated album The Collective in addition to previous collaborations with the likes of Charli XCX and Lil Yachty.
“She’s a true torch singer,” says one source. “Her vocals are tremendous. She’s very talented.”
While she’s believed to have an album’s worth of material, it’s unclear how or when, or with who, she’ll release her debut. One path could be through the Foo Fighters’ own imprint, Roswell, via RCA Records, a Sony Music subsidiary.
Representatives for Grohl declined comment; Raisen did not respond to a request for comment.
The eldest daughter of three (with Jordyn Blum; Dave Grohl revealed earlier this year that he had fathered another child outside of his marriage), Violet Grohl made her stage debut at the age of 12, singing Adele’s “When We Were Young” with her dad. She went on to perform at high-profile charity functions like 2020’s The Art of Elysium and 2022’s MusiCares Person of the Year Gala honoring Joni Mitchell, where her rendition of “Help Me” was a highlight of the star-heavy night.
In 2021, the father and daughter released a cover of the X song “Nausea.” A year later, the Foos’ family faced a tragic loss with the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins. At a tribute concert held in Hawkins’ honor at the Forum, she performed a cover of Leonard Cohen’s poignant “Hallelujah.” For the London concert, she paid homage to two more departed musicians, Jeff Buckley and Amy Winehouse.
Elsewhere in the L.A. area, Violet Grohl has been refining her live skills at the Sun Rose, an intimate venue on the Sunset Strip that’s affiliated with the Pendry Hotel West Hollywood. A year ago, she appeared with noted pianist and David Bowie collaborator Mike Garson, performing Bowie’s “Man Who Sold the World,” a song famously remade by her father’s former band, Nirvana. In February, she reprised the performance over two nights. Attendees noted the raspy, fortified tone of her vocals, and the confidence in taking on classics from her father’s catalog.
